SSSC 23 Things Digital – Thing 4 Digital Footprint

When I google myself I’m good with what comes up but then I’m sensible enough to not have posted anything I would later regret.  Very little comes up on my role in social care, probably because we are all so far behind on integrating IT usage into our workplaces! I am aware many service users are frightened of what people can see about them online and therefore avoid the internet altogether, which is not good.  Then there are others who may not be aware just how much information others can find about them should they go looking/ know how to look.  As an agency we offer regular IT sessions tailored to what people are looking for, part of which is an understanding of how public posting on social media and the internet in general can be.  We show others how to set privacy settings, to encourage hesitant users and to safeguard other more liberal users.

Anti virus software and use of strong passwords is another important part of supporting service users.  The other of the 8 tips to effectively manage digital footprint I find invaluable is to split financial use of the internet into different card accounts so that if one account is hacked its not such a devastating wrench to sort out.  App tracking and cookies Im not so up on so I really need to learn more about this to be able to pass on training and awareness.

Im not actually too sure who can see my location history either so Im going to look into this and also look into who can see where Ive been online.  Theres no point in lying about where Ive been I see! Just as well Ive nothing to hide, apart from that my life seems so tame!
