I enjoy collaborating with people on their rug design. I believe we all benefit from having around us things that make us feel good and more in harmony with ourselves. We all seek what is personally meaningful and I am more than happy to work with you to achieve and create your preference, style and taste in a design to fulfill your needs as a customer and to enhance your intended space.

Below are the steps involved to collaborate on a unique, custom rug.

I can make the rug myself and a recent development for me is partnering with others to provide greater choice in cost, materials and where your rug is made. Less complex designs can be made elsewhere in Scotland, UK, India and I mean to increase partners for even greater customer choice so watch this space!

Step 1.Inspiration came from a beach the commissioners love and their rug measured to fit just right into their entrance hallway.

  • discuss and collaborate on ideas

  • consider end use of product

  • create initial art work

This can be face to face, over the phone, email, social media  We can decide the best to communicate and pass visual ideas back and forth. Rugs can be made to measure for design effect, to fit awkward spaces or as upholstery furnishings.

Step 2.

Rugs can be as variable as people between design style, colour, size, shape, texture and can have organic edges as this Rose Rug.

  • discuss various qualities, prices, deposit and terms

  • match colours, agree yarns, texture and finishes

  • create images of finished item

  • quote timeline and final price

Prices are so variable depending on design complexity, material choice and where you decide to have your rug made. For a minimalist design price starts at about £140/square meter using up-cycled quality yarn from the UK textile industry or Indian wool.  Specialist yarns dyed to very specific shades can be ordered if need be. Materials range from Galloway and South Ayrshire Biosphere Wool to New Zealand Wool to Bamboo Silk. Price could rise to £500/square meter and more for a complex art piece for a specific request.

Step 3.Progress on your rugs creation can be provided. It takes many hours to tuft your rug depending on complexity and how well the gun behaves!

  • progress photos and reports

  • opportunity to tweak design choices

The rugs are made back to front so a mirror image has to be created on the stretched polyester backing fabric. Please click on this link How I Make a Rug for more detail on the rug making process. If I am making your rug there will quite probably be some uncomfortable moments of doubt at which point I may contact you to double check progress and decisions. Finishing enhancements such as carving into the pile for design definition can also be discussed and tweaked.
